Healthy Nutella

If you have been following me for a while, you might have noticed that I am a huge fan of nut butter! I always have a jar of homemade nut butter in my pantry and put it on almost anything: porridge, smoothie bowls, fruit, pancakes, you name it. You can also use it for baking healthy treats such as these carrot banana muffins. Or I eat it with a spoon out of the jar – guilty as charged.

While the good old almond butter is still my favorite (you can find the recipe here), I love to experiment with other nut and flavor combinations. Inspired by the talented Deliciously Ella (I had the pleasure of meeting her in NYC a couple of years ago), I wanted to try to replicate every kid’s favorite food: Nutella.

When growing up, Nutella was a very special treat at our house. We would only have it for very special occasions. And I loved it so much! That velvety rich cream of chocolate!

I haven’t had Nutella for a long time. Looking at it from a nutrition standpoint it became pretty unattractive to me. Did you know that around 50% is sugar?

That’s why I was so excited when I heard that you could create a healthier version. And I was curious if it would compare to the original one regarding flavor and texture.

Healthy Nutella

And I have great news! Healthy Nutella is a thing. With only three ingredients and a good blender or food processor, you can make homemade Nutella! And this version has around 90% healthy nuts and barely any sugar.

Give it a go and travel back to when you were a happy kid biting into your Nutella bread.

Love,

Marion

Ingredients
  • 400g organic hazelnuts
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • Sweetener (honey, agave syrup, maple syrup, or stevia) to taste
Directions
  • Step 1 Preheat oven to 200°C/390°F.
  • Step 2 Place hazelnuts on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and roast for about 10 minutes.
  • Step 3 Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
  • Step 4 Remove the skin by rubbing the hazelnuts between your fingers. If you’d like to save some time, feel free to skip this step. Although it does add some subtle bitterness to the final result, it will still taste fine. Set aside and let cool completely.
  • Step 5 Place hazelnuts in a blender or food processor and blend on highest speed until smooth. This might take up to 10-15 minutes depending on the type of blender or food processor you are using. Be patient until the mixture has a creamy, almost runny, consistency.
  • Step 6 Add cocoa powder and sweetener to taste. Mix again until well combined.
  • Step 7 Store in an airtight container (mason jar) in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
